The exterior of the Tesla Model Y doesn't really have any surprises: That the electric auto would be based on the chassis of the Model 3 is well known.
At a launch party in Los Angeles last night, Tesla revealed what could be its most important vehicle yet. Based on the underpinnings of the Model 3, the resemblance to its forebearer is striking to the point of being comical. Coefficient of drag will be a remarkable 0.23, making it one of the most wind-slippery production vehicles in history. However, BAML also notes that the Audi e-tron, BMW iNEXT, and Mercedes-Benz EQ will be direct competitors and in the market before Tesla. Cowen analyst Jeffrey Osborne stated that the "Model Y reveal underwhelmed us", adding that "the night held no surprises".
That's the day the carmaker gathered more than 115,000 deposits, at $1,000 each, in the 24 hours leading up to the start of the Model 3 launch event-before the sedan had even been shown. Musk had said in a January conference call that the company would "probably see a higher [sales] volume of the Y than [the Telsa Model 3]".
There are two other models: a dual motor all-wheel drive version and a "High-Performance" version.
Higher-end versions will start delivery in the autumn of next year. The regular Model Y will do 0-60 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds, while the Performance model can cut that ramp up time down to 3.5 seconds.
The newest offering from Tesla has seating for seven, a panoramic glass roof, and standard battery with 230 miles of range.
The numbers are similar with the Model Y, which starts at 120 mph for the Standard Range, then jumps to 130 mph for the Long Range, 135 mph for the Dual Motor AWD, and 150 mph for the Performance. It'll sticker for $52,200.
Nobody can quite agree on what the Tesla Model Y is. However, while all other versions are due to go into production in late-2020, the cheapest Model Y will arrive later, sometime in earl-2021. That did adjust the pricing, but still today Tesla is selling a $5,000 package that is mostly hope and dreams.
