Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot offered her congratulations to Brie Larson for Captain Marvel's big opening weekend.

"Civil War" and "Iron Man 3" have opened better in the Marvel cinematic universe. Now we're just doing what's natural. It seems likely that many felt drawn to the film's societal benchmarks, being the first female-led Marvel movie, as well as the first to feature a female director.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the superhero flick opened on International Women's Day, leaning into its inherent girl power.

It's the sixth largest worldwide debut ever.

"Captain Marvel" has soared to the top of the box office in its opening weekend.

Surprising audiences before the screening, Larson walked out holding one of the cinema's soft drink cups and thanked fans for their support. The world is indeed ready for a woman to take the Marvel reins, as judged by the many positive reviews of the film, both from critics and viewers. The film received an A CinemaScore from audiences.

Taff declined to address "Captain Marvel" foes but applauded Marvel and Kevin Feige for propelling a movie that expanded the Marvel universe. If you didn't see the movie over the weekend, but plan to do so in the near future, you're best off skipping this video until after you've seen it. "And I think you see that in the broadening of their fan base".

The box office bounty gives "Captain Marvel" the biggest opening of 2019 so far and signals a rebound for theater owners, whose sales are down 26% year-to-date. "Captain Marvel" single-handedly chopped nearly 5 percent off that figure with a weekend that overall was up 47 percent from the same past year. "From China to North America and Germany, these results once again demonstrate IMAX's ability to help launch break-out global blockbusters and is a fantastic start to what is shaping up to be an incredibly strong year for the industry".

The opening weekend takings are also the biggest for a female-led film.

Audiences in the USA and Canada for "Captain Marvel" were 55 percent male and 45 percent female. That's also the second-largest global opening ever for a Marvel Studios film, behind only last year's Avengers: Infinity War.

The character is expected to play a key role in Marvel's next film Avengers: Endgame, which is released in the United Kingdom on 25 April.
