Senior administration officials were troubled by the decision, which prompted the then White House chief of staff, John Kelly, to write an internal memo about how he had been ordered to give Kushner the top-secret clearance, according to the report.

However, a new report from the New York Times on Thursday seems to contradict what the president's daughter said.

USA officials who were charged with investigating Kushner's suitability to hold a security clearance grew concerned before the presidential adviser took office.

NBC News also reported, citing sources familiar with the matter, that Kushner's Federal Bureau of Investigation background check identified questions about his family's business, his foreign contacts, his foreign travel and meetings he had during the campaign.

"The revelation that President Trump personally intervened to overrule White House security officials and the Intelligence Community to grant a Top Secret security clearance to his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is the latest indicator of the President's utter disregard for our national security and for the men and women who sacrifice so much every day to keep us safe", Schiff said.

In his Friday letter, Cummings said the White House has engaged in "repeated, significant, and ongoing abuses of the security clearance system".

He went on to say that the administration has failed to provide "any information regarding the security clearance of any specific White House official, and the President has asserted no constitutional privilege to withhold this information from Congress".

"New stories, if accurate, do not change what was affirmed at the time", Mirijanian said.

"To date, the White House has not produced a single document or scheduled a single interview", Cummings said in a statement.

In a letter to White House Counsel Pat Cipollone, committee chair Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) urged the administration to turn over documentation related to their clearance process - emphasizing that previous requests have largely ignored.

"I mean being caught lying on air is a different thing", she said, noting longstanding reports that Ivanka is as image-conscious as her father - even "vociferously, intensely" so.

Cummings requested the White House respond to the request by Monday.

He's also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with whom his family has ties.

He received his top-secret clearance last May, the same month as the directive from the president, as described by the Times.

Huntsman asked Ivanka then about questions over her and Kushner's security clearance.
