But observers say Trump's string of bellicose threats directed at North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his country in 2017 - including his vow to rain "fire and fury" on North Korea and to "totally destroy" the nation of 25 million people if it threatened the US or its allies - contributed much to the fears of a bloody and possibly nuclear conflict at the time.
Akira Kawasaki, a steering committee member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, which won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize, said he "feels some doubt" about whether Trump's diplomatic and domestic policies could meet the conditions for the prize.
He "gave me the most handsome copy of a letter that he sent to the people who give out a thing called the Nobel Prize", Trump said during his announcement that he was declaring a national emergency at the southern border.
"He had rocket ships, and he had missiles flying over Japan, and they had alarms going off, you know that", Mr. Trump said.
Mr Trump said on Friday that he had received a "beautiful copy" of a letter sent by Shinzo Abe to the Nobel committee.
Tybring-Gjedde, who sits on the Norwegian Parliament's Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, also confirmed the joint nomination of Trump when contacted by Reuters.
The president said early exchanges with Kim were filled with "fire and fury", but since their first meeting past year the two had established a good relationship. He was there for about 15 seconds and got the Nobel Prize.
Trump said previous year that "everybody thinks" he should get the Nobel Peace Prize. He didn't even know what he got it for.
Trump added that he believed former President Barack Obama "would have gone to war with North Korea" during his term.
In January of that year, he also hailed Trump, saying he "deserves big credit for bringing about the inter-Korean talks".
"But that's okay", Trump said. "I think the people understand what we do".
When Trump spoke about the breakthrough with North Korea during a rally in MI a year ago on April 28, the crowd began chanting, "Nobel, Nobel, Nobel". The leadership of Russia, Iran and Turkey all welcomed Trump's decision to pull all USA troops out of Syria. I have a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un'. Months after their Singapore summit, Trump said that Kim had written him "beautiful letters" and that the two "fell in love".
