While the first round of AAF games were all kinds of fun, we have yet to see an overtime period.
Seattle-The Alliance of American Football league has captured the eyes of the world, because of the new rules, regulations, and even the storylines that some of the players had to endure to even make the roster.
The Salt Lake Stallions join the AAF with seven other teams, including the Fleet, Arizona Hotshots, San Antonio Commanders, Atlanta Legends, Birmingham Iron, Orlando Apollos and Memphis Express.
The AAF got off to a successful start in the ratings book as it filled the post-Super Bowl void for football fans. "They saw enough good plays, especially after the first quarter". Almost 21,000 people showed up and saw the Apollos beat the Atlanta Legends, 40-6, with Spurrier, 73, coaching for the first time since 2015.
The idea of the league is to give the sport of football a second season in the spring during the NFL offseason. The team in Arizona, the Hotshots, has 17 former Arizona Cardinals players on its roster. The teams are fired up and ready to go, as fans across the world wait in anticipation for the ball to hit the kickers foot, and mark the start of the game. "I think we had a pretty good crowd, 20,000 wasn't bad".
The events occurred in a unusual, chronological order, nearly as though fans were watching an inspirational Hollywood movie instead of the inaugural game of an upstart football league.
Ebersol acknowledged that opening night, broadcast on CBS, is no indicator of interest come Week 2, not to mention April, when the league will play its championship game in Las Vegas. That has proved challenging for startup pro football leagues in the past, and now it will be interesting to see if The AAF can break that trend.
Rain sent some early arrivals scurrying for cover in concession areas beneath the stands and intermittent showers fell most of the night, contributing to some slipping and sliding and occasional sloppy play.
First up on CBS Sports Network is the Memphis Express at Birmingham Iron at 4 p.m. ET.
The team plays their home opener at Rice-Eccles Stadium on February 23, but the Stallions will play their first game ever on February 10 when they travel to play the Arizona Hotshots. With the National Football League championship over and done, the AAF is slated to kick off today with several games across the nation.
