The majority of Friday's questioning surrounded Whitaker's oversight of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

He said he had not taken any action to interfere "in any way" with the probe. Remember: President Nixon made White House audio recordings of his conversations with his closest aides. "There has been no event.that has required me to take any action, and I have not interfered in any way" with Mueller's probe.

Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) pressed Whitaker about Mueller's probe.

Rosenstein also has tried to reassure people outside the Justice Department that irrespective of who is actually supervising the special counsel's office - whether him or Whitaker or the next likely attorney general, William Barr - the Mueller investigation would be handled "appropriately". The Democrat's "jaw dropped when Acting AG Whitaker told the chairman his 'five minutes is up, '" she reported.

"Although I can not speak about my communications with the president, I do want to make clear that I am personally committed to the integrity of the Department of Justice", Whitaker wrote.

Cohen asked Whitaker whether he has seen any documentation alleging violations of the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution when it comes to President Trump's connection to the organization leasing the building.

"If you appear before the Committee tomorrow morning and if you are prepared to respond to questions from our members, then I assure you that there will be no need for the Committee to issue a subpoena on or before February 8", Nadler wrote.

Republicans, who until recently led the committee, complained on Friday that the hearing was a "dog and pony" show meant to discredit the president.

Thursday's committee vote didn't issue a subpoena but allowed Nadler to do so if Whitaker was uncooperative.

NBC called it an "extraordinary move" for Whitaker to cut off Nadler. "I'm here voluntarily. I agreed to five-minute rounds". He talks to Anna Maria Tremonti about his time working on Trump's campaign, and having the president's ear.

The tense back-and-forth only served to raise the stakes on Whitaker's scheduled appearance, as each side accused the other of acting in bad faith, and sought to set a tone for the next two years of confrontations between the Democratic-controlled House and the Trump administration.

"Your failure to respond fully to our questions here today in no way limits the ability of this committee to get the answers in the long run - even if you are a private citizen when we finally learn the truth", Nadler said.

Why is Mr Whitaker controversial?

"Mr. Attorney General we are not joking here and your humor is not acceptable", Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) replied.

According to CNN, former Trump associate Roger Stone was "one of the last key campaign associates" to be investigated. Have you communicated anything you learned in that briefing about the investigation to President Trump?

"There have been witnesses hauled out of committee rooms in irons for being far less arrogant than that".

Nadler told CNN Democrats will not be intimidated by Trump. The Democrats originally launched probes that ended past year. The motion fell with a voice vote and Collins requested a roll call vote of all committee members.
