Trump first met Kim on June 12 in Singapore and has been eager to hold a second summit in spite of a lack of concrete progress in persuading North Korea to give up a nuclear weapons program that threatens the United States.
She had said at a press conference last month Vietnam was "very confident" about its ability and capacity to host the summit after showcasing it by organizing major worldwide events like APEC 2017 in Da Nang City. It is a short enough flight from Pyongyang for Kim, who otherwise travels by armoured train.
Hanoi has maintained diplomatic relations with Pyongyang since 1950 and Washington since 1995, and hosts embassies for both countries.
"Vietnam is the flawless model for North Korea", Lee said.
Choosing Vietnam over any other location also has a highly symbolic value.
"We do not know whether we will achieve an agreement - but we do know that after two decades of war, the hour has come to at least try for peace", he said. The impoverished nation faced economic sanctions and had to get back on its feet.
Vietnam is also often lauded as an economic success story that North Korea could emulate. Its one-party state model is still in place, but that doesn't stop it from doing business with the rest of the world.
Mr Trump's attendance at the 2017 APEC meeting means "he's familiar with the country and has good rapport with its leaders", he said.
"There are certainly complex economic issues in which North Korea can learn from both China and Vietnam", Carl Thayer told DW.
Cheon Seong Whun, a visiting research fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies in Seoul, said Trump could use Vietnam to "signal to Beijing that North Korea is not in your hands, we have a counterbalance to Chinese influence in this area". Over the past years, relations between Washington and Hanoi have improved significantly.
"Trump will be meeting Chairman Kim for the second time".
In May 2017, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc was welcomed by Trump in the White House, followed by a visit by Trump to Hanoi later that year.
The US base in the area was used to store Agent Orange, a chemical deployed during the Vietnam war which led to cancer, birth defects and a host of other health problems for multiple generations of Vietnamese citizens.
"As part of a bold new diplomacy, we continue our historic push for peace on the Korean Peninsula", he said during the speech, which focused on the country's foreign policy and economic status.
Experts say that North Korea will likely seek to offer the demolition of its Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center - North Korea's major nuclear site that houses a uranium enrichment facility and reactors - in exchange for a United States promise to formally declare an end to the 1950-53 Korean War and to open a liaison office in Pyongyang.
