Nintendo Switch destroyed PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sales

Nintendo Switch UPDATE: January 2019 Nintendo Direct to happen THIS week? Latest rumours

Nintendo Switch shipments to shrink in 2019

NPD's annual sales summary wasn't just good news for Nintendo.

Possible dates for a January 2019 Direct would be January 24 and January 31.

A year ago the Nintendo Switch makers held a Nintendo Direct Mini in January where Mario Tennis Aces and Dark Souls Remastered were announced.

If you were thinking about holding out a few more months for a new Nintendo Switch model or a permanent price cut, you might be out of luck. The video revealed a February 1 launch date for the turn-based strategy game Wargroove (Chucklefish), the announcement of the next game in the acclaimed SteamWorld universe, SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech (Image & Form Games / Thunderful Publishing) and more indie news.

Nintendo Switch sales have surpassed 10.5 million units in the USA and the platform's aligned launch sales are higher than those of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The reason for the December surge was credited to the release of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which became the best selling game in the franchise and helped Nintendo rake in the sales and beat the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as the best-selling console in 2018.

Since that number is known (2.7 million), we can add 70 per cent to it to get rough first-month sales for Ultimate at a little over 4.5 million units - again, not counting download sales.

It is expected that this week the USA video game hardware sales for December 2018 will be revealed. It simply has a larger potential audience than its TV-focused counterparts - while the PS4 and Xbox One are more powerful, they're not as flexible.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see what price point Nintendo's more affordable Switch console hits if it does exist. The strength of the Switch overall also boosted the sales of its major games, sending 2017 games Mario Kart 8, Breath of the Wild, and Super Mario Odyssey into 2018's top 20.

Naturally, this new spec for an early 2019 Nintendo Switch console is far from official, and it is worth remembering what Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime said in December of previous year, that "the current execution of Nintendo Switch with the Joy-Con and all of the capabilities, that's our focus right now".
