Though not included on the Best Director list, Bradley Cooper is instead nominated for his acting in "A Star Is Born". Although it dominated the 2018 film landscape (both at the box office and in cultural influence), many awards prognosticators wondered whether the Academy would choose to recognize it, especially since the Oscars have historically overlooked blockbuster fare. Then Alfonso Cuarón's masterful Spanish-language black-and-white Netflix drama Roma somewhat dominated the critics awards, scoring Best Picture trophy after Best Picture trophy.
