Though not included on the Best Director list, Bradley Cooper is instead nominated for his acting in "A Star Is Born". Although it dominated the 2018 film landscape (both at the box office and in cultural influence), many awards prognosticators wondered whether the Academy would choose to recognize it, especially since the Oscars have historically overlooked blockbuster fare. Then Alfonso CuarĂ³n's masterful Spanish-language black-and-white Netflix drama Roma somewhat dominated the critics awards, scoring Best Picture trophy after Best Picture trophy. Cold War's Pawel Pawlikowski, who is no doubt be stunned as anyone by his best director nomination.

But, Thor believes "A Star is Born" is the favourite. While Cooper received nominations in the best actor and best picture categories, it would've been nice to see him recognized for impressively directing his first feature film. "Thank you Ale A. First Reformed is the sort of quietly understated critical darling that often struggles to wow the Academy, so it's a pleasant surprise to see it landing a nomination. After Bigelow's big win, no female directors were even nominated in the category until a year ago, when Greta Gerwig was nominated for her feature directorial debut "Lady Bird". However, his very timely BlacKkKlansman proved it had the winning recipe.

Fast forward nearly ten years later and two other films became contenders for major Oscar consideration that did not involve effects related nominations. Fortunately, Adam Driver was. Peele, McKittrick and Blum were nominated in the same category for "Get Out" past year, and Peele went on to win in the original screenplay category.

The nominations will be announced on Tuesday starting at 5:20 am Pacific time (1320 GMT).

Toni Collette's buzzy Hereditary performance was, as some expected, not nominated because when's the last time a horror film got any awards season love at all?

Viola Davis can do it all. An Oscar win would burnish Netflix's credibility as a go-to place for top-tier original films.

They say that when it comes to the Oscars it's an honor just to be nominated.
