Jones wins light-heavyweight title as Nunes makes history

Jon Jones makes winning return to UFC with TKO win over Alexander Gustafsson

Jon Jones Knocked Out Alexander Gustafsson In The Third Round At UFC 232

UFC President Dana White called Nunes the best female fighter of all time, saying after the fight: "Look at her resume, who she's beat". The Brazilian has said she has one fight remaining on her UFC contract, and she has discussed the possibility of transitioning into boxing. "Wait until you see what happens with Oscar De La Hoya in the next three years".

Amanda Nunes proved to all the doubters what she was made of: guts, steel, and a whole lot of talent. "I'm the new 'champ champ.' I said that before, and now I'm just achieving this dream". Despite the crushing loss, Cyborg was all class addressing the media, giving props to her opponent as someone who had long deserved respect.

The 30-year-old from Windang on the NSW south coast, did well with his jab and quickly got back to his feet after some takedowns and being floored early in the second. Is it safe to say that, after Saturday, Nunes sees herself as the greatest fighter in women's MMA? No champion is guaranteed an immediate rematch after losing the title, but if any fighter is deserving of an instant rematch, it's Cyborg. There was a knockout win, but it wasn't Justino (20-2) who walked out of the cage as the victor. And for what it's worth, the aftermath of Nunes's pulverizing victory included Cyborg sounding hungry for a rematch.

"Then, when I wake up, the fight is going to move to L.A".

Wood used his post-fight interview to request that the UFC give him a hometown fight when the octagon returns to London on March 16, 2019. "This [loss] put more fire in my heart to fight".

Although many in the sport feel Jones should step up to face Cormier for the heavyweight title, former Olympic wrestler Cormier hinted that he might be persuaded to move down to 205lbs to challenge Jones for a third time if the drug-testing arrangements were increased.

But co-headliner Amanda Nunes wasn't one of these people. Could Cyborg successfully make adjustments? She played her role as the B-side well in successful pay-per-view headlining roles opposite Rousey and Tate, but struggled on her own in a pair of A-side attempts, including a UFC 224 card against Raquel Pennington in May that moved a reported (and paltry) 85,000 buys.

"It was always about being the champion again", Jones said.

Hopefully, the animosity can be put aside and the right thing is done for all parties involved.
