The Red Devils suffered a humiliating 3-1 loss to bitter rivals Liverpool FC at Anfield in their final game under Jose Mourinho before his dismissal.

Mourinho thought he was arriving at Carrington to discuss Manchester United's January transfer plans with Ed Woodward on Tuesday - but got a nasty shock.

Ashley Young played at right back and although he bombed on impressively, this new aggressive approach suits Diogo Dalot perfectly and the Portuguese flier will be looking for a recall here.

But reacting to the sack of Mourinho, Matic stated that United players were responsible.

Woodward then had a late-night phone call with the Glaziers in America which is understood to have finally sealed Mourinho's fate.

The Times do not name the player, only saying he is a key member of the side.

The Times also claim some of United's squad celebrated his departure after the Glazier family took the crucial decision.

Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward reportedly chose to sack Jose Mourinho after receiving a phone call from a senior player demanding that the manager leave the club.

The Norwegian is a relatively inexperienced manager, so he's going to need all the help he can get between now and the end of the season.

High flying Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as United's No.1 target following his achievement with the young Spurs side.

Manchester United's share price increased by almost six per cent after Mourinho was sacked as the club's manager.

After closing at 17.30 United States dollars (£13.65) on Monday, the share price steadily increased to 18.39 (£14.51).

However, United are still way off the pace, languishing in 6th place behind Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Man City and league leaders Liverpool.
