Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer will step down after the Rose Bowl

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer will step down after the Rose Bowl

Former Ohio State players are paying tribute to retiring coach Urban Meyer.

Day is Ohio State's offensive coordinator, who served as interim coach earlier this season when Meyer was suspended for the first three games of the season after an investigation into his handling of abuse allegations against a former assistant.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.

He heads into the game with an 82-9 record during his Ohio State tenure, including a ideal record over archrival MI.

A detailed report issued by an investigative committee left a lasting stain, detailing behavior by Meyer that could have taken down a coach of lesser stature. The 54-year-old has battled the effects of an arachnoid cyst on his brain, which causes severe headaches, especially when under stress.

Offensive Coordinator Ryan Day is expected to take over as the Buckeyes' new full-time head coach.

Meyer guided Ohio State to the national championship in 2014 after doing so at Florida in 2006 and 2008.

Everyone had to chase Meyer, who would win two titles, and that chase led to to the hire of Nick Saban, who arrived in the SEC two years after Meyer got to Florida. He joined Ohio State's staff in 2017 after stops at Temple (twice), Boston College (twice), the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. I like coach Day, so that is good that they are not going outside to hire a new coach.

With a 186-32 record over 17 seasons, Meyer steps down with one of the best winning percentages in the history of college football. The Buckeyes went 3-0 during that run, including what at the time was considered a major win at Texas Christian. "[Brian] Kelly, Coach Meyer, everybody has been eyeballing him since he was a young graduate assistant".

Meyer, among the elite coaches in college football and one of its highest paid, has coached at Ohio State for seven seasons. Ohio State will officially name Day as the permanent replacement on Tuesday. But just like at Florida cracks began to emerge at Ohio State.

"I believe I will not coach again", he added that he was fairly certain in that response.
