Former US President George Bush dies at age 94, family spokesman says

Former US President George HW Bush has passed away aged 94, a confirmation from his family informed.

"Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died".

President Bush's death comes months after the death of his wife, Barbara Bush.

Only one other USA president, John Adams, had a son who also became president.

In 1992, the former Republican President lost re-election to Democratic candidate Bill Clinton.

The day after her death, Mr Bush was hospitalised with a blood infection. They had been married for 73 years.

In 2012, the former president announced that he had vascular Parkinsonism.

"His life spanned the American Century-he fought in World War 2. took part in the Texas oil boom. served out a distinguished career in public service including serving as president during the final days of the Cold War".

As the last United States president to have served in World War II and the country's last Cold War leader, the end of Mr Bush's time in the White House marked the end of a political era.

His son, George W Bush, became the 43rd president of the United States.
