Citi separately announced today that it would move 1,100 workers out of the building over the first half of 2019 to make way for Amazon and into the company's newly renovated 38-story headquarters at 388 Greenwich Street in Tribeca.

Plus, even though smaller cities didn't land Amazon HQ2, Amazon did announce it would add 5,000 jobs at a new operations hub in Nashville, and has already added 6,000 jobs in numerous other 218 cities that did not make its list of the 20 finalists.

Some residents and representatives of New York's Long Island City and Virginia's Arlington reacted to Tuesday's announcement with concerns over how the offices will impact their communities and the various incentives (mostly financial) that Amazon cultivated.

Early reports of this announcement circulated earlier this month, when The New York Times reported the two locations would be Crystal City, Virginia, and Queens, New York.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Amazon has officially chosen New York City and Northern Virginia for its new additional headquarters.

The e-commerce titan originally announced its HQ2 plans by touting investments of over $5 billion and the creation of 50,000 jobs (split 50/50 between the two locales).

In setting off the flurry of interest, Amazon said it could spend more than US$5 billion to build its second headquarters over the next 17 years.

Amazon narrowed the list to 20 cities in January, and in recent weeks, smaller locations appeared to fall out of the running.

"Today, with Amazon committing to expand its headquarters in Long Island City, New York can proudly say that we have attracted one of the largest, most competitive economic development investments in United States history", Cuomo said in his statement. An affordable housing crisis there prompted the city council to adopt a head tax on businesses in May, which Amazon helped overturn in a subsequent city council vote.

Virginia Tech said the campus will be on U.S. Route 1 at National Landing in Alexandria near Potomac Yard, about two miles away from Amazon's new location in Arlington.

A spokeswoman for Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A portion of the sign advertising Amazon Go is seen outside the grocery store's location on June 16, 2017 in Seattle, Washington. The company will continue hiring employees for its Seattle headquarters.

In a statement on Tuesday, Tory said the process of bidding for Amazon's huge expansion, dubbed HQ2, has raised the city's profile around the world as a tech hub. "We made that point to Amazon in our pitch and in person when they visited us here", he said in a statement to The Canadian Press in September.
