She said the names of the victims are expected to be released Monday by the Village of Lake Hallie Police Department. One additional 10-year-old is still in the hospital, but they say she is reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities have identified the three Girl Scouts and a parent killed after they were struck by a pickup truck along a rural Wisconsin highway.
The group of seven girls and five parents had "highly visible" green safety vests on at the time, police said in a statement. Sokup said the crash happened before a hill and there were no blind spots.
Police say a pickup truck veered off the road into a ditch and struck them. Treu sped away from the scene, but later turned himself in. He is being held on 13 possible charges: four counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, four counts of hit-and-run involving death and one count hit-and-run involving great bodily harm. Girl Scouts sang songs in memory of the victims, who were members of Troop 3055. A fourth girl who was struck by the pickup remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Saturday evening.
The girls were in the fourth grade at Halmstad Elementary School in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune quoted a relative of a girl in the troop who was not injured as saying.
Lake Hallie Police say the truck Treu was driving veered out of it's lane, crossed the center line and left the road entirely when it traveled into a ditch, hitting 4 children and 1 adult.
"Our hearts are with our Girl Scout sisters in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin", the Girl Scouts of the US and its CEO, Sylvia Acevedo, posted on Twitter and Facebook.
"I have one son here that's in Scouts and he's wearing his Scout uniform to help represent the scouting community", Schafer said.
'This is a hard time for our students, families and staff, ' Eliopoulos said in a message to parents.
Grief counselors will be available for local students at school on Monday.
There is unspeakable sadness in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. "We grieve with you", the department posted on Facebook. At the time of the crash, all members of the group were in the ditch on the west side of County Road P just south of the Highway 29 overpass bridge.
Two other girls were taken to hospital with critical injuries; however, doctors could not save one of the girls, who died several hours later.
Haylee Hickle, 10, Autumn Helgeson, 10, and nine-year-old Jayna Kelley were struck and killed by Colton Treu in Lake Hallie, Wisconsin on Saturday morning. Sokup says he will be charged with four homicide counts.
