"My comment is only that everyone knows how good he is, how important he is for Manchester United and, if the club want to be better than it is and not worse, obviously it would be very important to keep David".

Mourinho admitted after the Juventus game that Lukaku was struggling but on Friday at his pre-match press conference he backed Lukaku to bounce back.

Mourinho told reporters when quizzed about Lukaku's form on the back of a 1-0 European defeat to Juventus: "No criticism at all". I think we had a spell in the first half where we got on top and, especially in the second half, we were on the front foot.

As a matter of fact, the same trend as been witnessed in the team's last seven games in the Premier League.

Manchester United are concerned that losing Paul Pogba will hit the club hard financially and are under "commercial pressure" not to sell him.

The Belgian will line up against his old club Everton in the Premier League on Sunday having not found the back of the net since United's 2-1 win over Watford in mid-September.

"In the other side was huge quality and sometimes when we speak about quality people look for Cristiano, Dybala or [Miralem] Pjanic", Mourinho said to BT Sport.

At Pogba's best, he can control the tempo of a game, spraying passes to any corner of the pitch, effortlessly gliding past players with his acceleration and quick feet.

"Could I play (Marcus) Rashford there?"

The Portuguese manager criticized the Manchester United board for not providing him with sufficient funds to spend in the transfer market.

Mourinho believes Woodward has damaged United's title chances by failing to bring in sufficient reinforcements and a row has played out in public between the two figures.

"One day he will score and one day his confidence levels will be back to normal, which clearly they are not there but I always feel that", Mourinho said.

United, who bought the forward for £75 million, need him to rediscover his spark on the field in order to rekindle their 2018-19 campaign.

Although United are now a world away Juventus, they are still favourites to finish second in Group H ahead of Young Boys and Valencia, and qualify for the last 16 of the tournament.
