‘Halloween’ scares up $77.5 million in ticket sales

Without another big horror movie getting a wide release before Halloween, I wouldn't be surprised if Halloween sticks at the top next weekend as well.

October's box office receipts continue to impress as "Venom" and "A Star Is Born" deliver healthy numbers in their third outings. The 2018 box office remains up 10.6 percent compared to the previous year.

Thus far, Halloween is the second-highest opening of all time, falling behind Stephen King's record-breaker, It, released a year ago.

"You take the nostalgia for 'Halloween, ' especially with the return of Jamie Lee Curtis, and you combine that with the Blumhouse brand and its contemporary currency in the genre and it just made for a ridiculously potent combination at the box office this weekend", said Jim Orr, Universal's president of domestic distribution.

As well as Curtis, Nick Castle, who played the original Michael Myers, is also back for this one, not that you'd ever know. "Halloween" is now Curtis' biggest opening to date, as well as the best horror opening with a female lead. Biggest movie opening with a female lead over 55. But the film was also a huge win for Curtis, who reprised her role as Laurie Strode, who tries again to escape the clutches of masked killer Michael Myers. That easily beat the old record for a slasher movie, set in 2009 by a reboot of the Friday the 13th series, and keeps the industry on a record path for October. The executive, known for making "Paranormal Activity" a billion-dollar franchise, said he was talking with many female directors in the wake of the controversy. That's good for the second-biggest October opening in history, only behind Venom, which made $80.3 million for its first weekend earlier this month.

There was also more bad news for Damien Chazelle's biographical drama First Man, which recounts the story of Neil Armstrong's historic voyage to the moon.

Movie theater attendance was up overall the last few days, with this particular weekend (42nd of the year) posting record-breaking ticket sales of about 18.2 million, the highest on record (that is, since 1982).
