A passenger plane has crash-landed into the ocean around the tiny Pacific island nation of Micronesia. We ourselves, Truk Stop, sent out our dive boat to assist, but returned as there was already a good crowd of people already helping transport folks to the [runway]. Everyone made it off alive.
Jaynes said before he got off the plane through an emergency exit, water was waist high inside the aircraft. He said the flight attendants were panicking and yelling, and that he suffered a minor head injury. "I thought this is not the way it's supposed to happen". "One would think they might be afraid of approaching the plane that's just crashed".
"They're people that come here to go to work or go to the store or bring fish to the market to sell", Colson said.
"They immediately starting coming out in boats".
Initially, the airline had said all 47 passengers and crew had managed to evacuate the sinking aircraft safely - but on Saturday afternoon, it confirmed that one passenger was unaccounted for.
The sequence of events remains unclear. Several passengers were injured - one critically - but everyone survived.
It could have been much worse.
The clip shows sailors using the aircraft's right wing as a makeshift mooring for the boat. The airline and the U.S. Navy both said the plane landed in the lagoon short of the runway. "Everybody came together and rushed to the plane and rescued the passengers".
In 2008, an Asia Pacific Airlines cargo Boeing 727 overran and ended up with its nose landing gear in the lagoon at the end of the Pohnpei airport runway. It said it was in touch with embassies, passenger representatives, stakeholders and families of the crew.
After the crash, all flights in and out of the Chuuk International Airport were suspended.
Air Niugini issued a brief statement via Twitter shortly after the crash.
Air Niugini's network is concentrated on domestic routes linking the capital, Port Moresby, with isolated points across the Papua New Guinea archipelago, but it flies as far as Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Micronesia is a constitutional government in free association with the United States; achieved independence in 1986. Chuuk is in the Caroline Islands between the Northern Mariana Islands to the north and Papua New Guinea to the south.
"I'm alive", said Jaynes, the passenger.
