Hurricanes: Astronauts see Florence, Isaac, Helene storms from space

The order which helps mobilize resources to prepare for the storm directs state agencies to work closely with localities to identify any needs in advance of its possible arrival

Hurricane Florence Strengthens, Poses Major Threat to Southeast and Mid-Atlantic

The NHC warned that Florence "is forecast to rapidly strengthen to a major hurricane by Monday night, and is expected to remain an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday". Shortly before 2 p.m., Alert Carolina released a statement noting that until further notice, classes and operations would run as scheduled at the University.

By Friday night Florence will be down to a tropical storm. Virginia, North Carolina, and SC have all declared states of emergency.

Just had calls with South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Virginia Governor Ralph Northam regarding the incoming storm.

More than 1.5 million people were ordered to evacuate their homes along the USA southeast coast as Hurricane Florence, the most powerful to menace the Carolinas in almost three decades, barreled closer on Tuesday.

A forecast from the hurricane center projected that Florence will pick up speed in the coming days.

The U.S. military said it was sending an advance team to Raleigh, North Carolina, to coordinate with federal and state partners.

Beyond the damage from wind and high surf, Hurricane Florence is predicted to slow over the Carolinas where it may dump up to 30 inches of rain over much of North and SC.

At noon on Monday, Hurricane Florence blew into a Category 4 classification, a level experts previously predicted wouldn't occur until later in the week. This general motion is expected to continue for the next few days.

This week, most major US airlines are waiving change fees for passengers whose plans change because they are flying to or from cities in the path of Hurricane Florence.

Tropical Storm Isaac, located 775 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, is moving towards the west near 16 miles per hour (mph).

The United States was hit with a series of high-powered hurricanes previous year, including Hurricane Maria, which killed some 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, and Hurricane Harvey, which killed about 68 people and caused an estimated $1.25 billion in damage with catastrophic flooding in Houston.

"All of the evidence points to an extreme disaster in the making in the mid-East Coast/Carolina region", said Bryan Norcross, a senior hurricane specialist with the Weather Channel. It's now moving WNW or 295 degrees at 16 miles per hour.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles.

WILMINGTON - Hurricane Florence is now a Category 4 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said operators would begin shutting down nuclear plants at least two hours before hurricane-force winds arrive.

Issac delivers swell to the Lesser Antilles as it approaches the islands and also enhances trade winds around the northeast Caribbean, helping to send swell to some of the northern coasts as well.

Hurricane Florence may become a category 4 storm.
