His returns and defense-to-offense skills as impeccable as ever, Djokovic collected his 14th Grand Slam title and second in a row by getting through every crucial moment for a 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over 2009 champion del Potro at Flushing Meadows.
Djokovic, whose progress among the pantheon of tennis' best ever players stalled suddenly following his 12th major title at the 2016 French Open, is now back at the very top of his game courtesy of his impressive 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 win over the third-seeded Argentine.
It is his 14th Grand Slam title, which ties him with Pete Sampras for third on the all-time major singles titles list behind Federer's 20 and Nadal's 17.
But off the back of a 24-shot rally, Djokovic broke again for 5-3 and he was within tantalising touching distance of his 14th Grand Slam title, just three months after he had left Roland Garros in despair after a shattering quarter-final exit.
Djokovic and del Potro embrace.
"When I had a surgery of my elbow earlier this year I could truly understand what Juan Martin was going through with his surgeries for two or three years that kept him away from the tour".
When another forehand error cost Del Potro his serve early in the second, all the momentum was with Djokovic.
Djokovic began the second set in the same vein applying vast pressure on Del Potro's serve.
An eight-time finalist in NY who had only previously lifted the trophy in 2011 and 2015, the Serbian was made to work hard on Sunday as Del Potro came from a break down in the second and third sets.
"I want to say Pete, I love you, you're my idol", said Djokovic of Sampras.
The eighth game was an epic, lasting over 20 minutes and featuring eight deuces before Djokovic withstood the pressure to hold.

Djokovic had lost five previous finals at Flushing Meadows, but he was determined to make amends for his lack of trophies in NY as his defensive ability combined with his ruthless prowess saw him break in the fourth game, although Del Potro was not in the mood to give up so easily as he hit straight back.
"You can lose or win a trophy, but the love from the crowd, it could be even bigger than the tournament", del Potro said.
