Nvidia announces new raytracing-focused RTX 2080, 2080 Ti graphics cards

The GeForce RTX 2070, RTX 2080, and the RTX 2080 Ti are built based on Nvidia's Turing architecture, introduced just a week ago, and are the world's first real-time ray-tracing GPUs.

The catalog also states that the RTX 2080 Ti will bring "real-time ray tracing" support and AI to games. Powered by Nvidia's all-new Turing architecture and featuring real-time ray tracing capabilities, Zotac's new gaming cards have been tailored to suit the various needs of serious gamers. The RTX 2070 will come at a later date, but is still likely to be about a month later, while newer cards that would replace the GTX 1060 Ti and lower will be announced in the coming months.

There may be hand-wringing out there over Nvidia's new ray-tracing graphics family, but that isn't stopping PC vendors from jumping in with both PCIe slots.

EVGA is also hopping aboard the RTX 20-series hype train with a number of RTX 2080 cards available. The GTX 1080 and 1080 Ti have similar power and cooling requirements as the RTX models, so these coolers should be sufficient for the RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti, though how far you can overclock might vary more depending on your cooler.

The 2070 starts at $499, while the 2080 starts at $699, while the 2080 Ti starts at $999.

Of course, we will get back to the Turing GPU and the RTX series as soon as Nvidia gives us all the technical information and once it gives the green light for reviews. Based on initial performance data, not to mention all the new features like the RT cores and Tensor cores, demand is going to be high.

18 Turing SMs running at the same clock speeds of NVIDIA's RTX Quadro series, which is about ~1.7GHz would generate roughly 8 TFLOPS of single precision compute performance. Game developers are all set to adopt this technology this year.

Scenes from Metro Exodus, Assetto Corsa, Shadow of the Tomb Raider then played, showcasing the difference in reflections, global illumination, screen space reflections, and hard shadows with RTX effects enabled and disabled.
