Nvidia announces new raytracing-focused RTX 2080, 2080 Ti graphics cards

Nvidia reveals new RTX GPUs, priced from $600 to $1,200, and ready to pre-order now

The new 20-series GPUs are expected to deliver up to 6 times the performance of the previous-generation graphics cards. The GTX 2080 Ti and GTX 2080 are up for pre-orders right now, and will be available on September 20.

Some of these had been revealed in a leak earlier this week, with website VideoCardz letting the cat out of the bag prior to the official announcement, feeding into the speculation frenzy that was already underway. However, VideoCardz reckons the RTX 2080 Ti model will be a triple fan model.

In other news, in the same blog-post, NVIDIA also posted a PCB shot and shows a photo of the new vapor chamber which covers the TU104 GPU (RTX 2080). With 4,352 CUDA cores and 11GB of GDDR6 video memory with a speed of 14Gbps and bandwidth of 616 GB/s, the new graphics card has some serious pixel-pushing power. Newegg is listing the RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio for a reference-matching $800, and the RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio for a similarly-standard $1200.

Maybe you'll be able to watch that reflected light go out as bayonet them, such is the attention to detail that DICE has thrown at this seeming labour of graphical love. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that the GeForce RTX 2070 is more powerful than the GTX Titan XP, previously Nvidia's most powerful graphics card.

The new RTX GPUs from Nvidia are the first consumer grade GPUs to come with the company's newest Turing architecture.

Still, ray tracing has always been something of a holy grail for games graphics - it was previously confined to high-end CGI setups. "Everything just works because ray tracing just works". Both of these first-person games will be among the first that will support real-time ray tracing via NVIDIA's RTX technology. Developers include EA, Square Enix, EPIC Games, and more. Epic Games is also working on integrating ray tracing technology into Unreal Engine so developers can tap into its power easily.

Ray-tracing is a rendering and lighting technique used to create realistic graphics using real-time light reflections and cinematic effects.

Playing the new Rotterdam map in Battlefield 5, however, was more convincing of how good real-time ray tracing can make a game look. You can see 100% more detail thanks to seeing the flame in the reflection of the water, or in the reflections of windows on the buildings on the street.

From a purely visual point of view, however, it's hard not to be impressed with the fact that actual games released this year, on hardware that's going to be available in less than a month, are going to have real-time ray tracing built into them.
