Brennan himself fired back at the White House after the announcement, saying it was "an attempt to scare into silence others who might dare to challenge" Trump.
Sanders, however, denied during the briefing that the revocation of Brennan's security clearance was tied to the former Obama administration official's frequent criticism of the president and his administration. McRaven's name was not on Trump's list.
The harsh criticism coming from an unalloyed American hero and respected military leader, who has so far steered clear of the political fray, drew comments of surprise on Twitter, a forum where Trump routinely excoriates his critics. In the White House's own announcement of his security revocation, press secretary Sarah Sanders accused Brennan of demonstrating "erratic behavior" and specifically cited testimony Brennan gave to Congress previous year in denying that the so-called Steele dossier was a factor in the intelligence community's ultimate conclusion regarding Russia's interference in the 2016 election.
