"Mr Trump's claims of no collusion are, in a word, hogwash".

"Few Americans have done more to protect this country than John", McRaven wrote in the Washington Post op-ed.

"He's acted like a political hack, and not a national security professional", Kennedy said.

President Donald Trump urged his Attorney General Jeff Sessions to sue certain pharmaceutical companies that have contributed to the opioid crisis in the United States.

"Director Brennan's recent statements purport to know as fact that the Trump campaign colluded with a foreign power". All are critics of the president or are people who Trump appears to believe are against him.

The initial White House statement about Brennan's clearance made no reference to the Russian Federation investigation. An initial statement released by the White House cited what it called the former spy chief's "erratic conduct", "wild outbursts", and "increasingly frenzied commentary". Trump blames Brennan and others for planting the seeds of the special counsel's probe that has dogged his presidency for the last 15 months.

Shortly afterwards the statement was issued again with the date removed.

"Revoke my security clearance, too".

The former Central Intelligence Agency director took aim at Trump for his public call as a candidate in July 2016 for Russian Federation to help find missing emails of his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, who was being scrutinised for having used a private email server while secretary of state.

"I don't see why he would need a security clearance".

Brennan himself fired back at the White House after the announcement, saying it was "an attempt to scare into silence others who might dare to challenge" Trump.

Sanders, however, denied during the briefing that the revocation of Brennan's security clearance was tied to the former Obama administration official's frequent criticism of the president and his administration. McRaven's name was not on Trump's list.

The harsh criticism coming from an unalloyed American hero and respected military leader, who has so far steered clear of the political fray, drew comments of surprise on Twitter, a forum where Trump routinely excoriates his critics. He is the only current government employee on the list. "I think they're not good people". "I think they're not good people".

Former CIA directors and other top national security officials are typically allowed to keep their clearances, at least for some period.

In the White House's own announcement of his security revocation, press secretary Sarah Sanders accused Brennan of demonstrating "erratic behavior" and specifically cited testimony Brennan gave to Congress previous year in denying that the so-called Steele dossier was a factor in the intelligence community's ultimate conclusion regarding Russia's interference in the 2016 election.
