Redskins lose Guice for season to torn ACL

Tom Brady’s contract: Patriots add $5M in new incentives

Reports: Brady, Patriots close to contract adjustment

The competition is now wide open after Guice's season-ending injury.

Selected in the second round of this year's draft, former LSU standout Guice went down awkwardly as he was tackled from behind on an impressive 34-yard scamper negated by a holding penalty.

Guice hyperextended his left knee at LSU last season but was held out of only one game.

Prior to Guice's injury, Washington's running back situation was in a bit of a "three-for-all" in terms of who will see the majority of touches behind veteran Chris Thompson, a 5-foot-8, 195-pound back better utilized in the passing game. Both players are expected to make a full recovery and are looking forward to playing in 2019. Who steps up? It could be Samaje Perine, who had a disappointing rookie season in 2017 but had excellent college production at Oklahoma.

Daron Payne, the team's 2018 first round pick, is nursing a high-ankle sprain, which caused him to be out 2-3 weeks.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday - the day of the Patriots' preseason opener - that the Patriots will be adding some incentives to Brady's contract in order to likely raise his salary to something more commensurate with other National Football League quarterbacks. The Redskins also announced tight end Manasseh Garner suffered an ACL injury during Thursday's game and will also miss the 2018 season.
