Rafa Benitez

GETTY Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has been left frustrated with this summer's transfer dealings

Newcastle boss Benitez has cut a frustrated figure in pre-season despite last month declaring he would like to stay on Tyneside for "five or 10 years" provided the club's ownership supports him in improving the squad.

Venezuelan worldwide Rondon may not be the most prolific striker, hitting just 24 goals in 108 Premier League games for the Baggies, but he has the physicality and work rate Benitez is looking for.

The loan swap between Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle and West Brom hitman Salomon Rondon is expected to go through today. The sale of Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to recently promoted Fulham for a reported £22 million suggests that the money is there.

Though it's unclear who Benitez has in mind to add to his squad, Newcastle fans can take solace in the fact that they have a manager who isn't sitting idly by and letting Mike Ashley get away with avoiding putting his hands in his pockets yet again.

He said: "It was a bad game".

Following a victory over Chelsea on the last day of the season last campaign, supporters were in ecstasy. We were poor and we made too many mistakes.

Centre of defence sees only Ciaran Clark (303 minutes) get significant time on the pitch, with Jamaal Lascelles (180 minutes) next best, but Lejeune now injured and summer signing Fabian Schar only 102 minutes.

He was asked if he was hinting at the player recruitment at the club, to which he said: "Everything".

"As I say things aren't going well off the pitch and you can see a reflection".

"We have to wake up - that's it". Exciting times ahead for the Magpies, who open the season at home on Saturday against Tottenham.
