Child becomes first Manitoban infected with West Nile Virus in 2018

The Iowa Public Health Department said in a news release Friday that the victim was 81 or older and lived in central Iowa.

No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in the metro so far this year. Use them according to label instructions.

The DEP and its county partners across the state have been conducting routine, localized spraying to control infected adult populations of mosquitoes.

In Maryland, there were five reported cases of West Nile past year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These bodies of standing water are where mosquitoes lay their eggs.

The best way to prevent infection from any mosquito-borne illness, including West Nile Virus, is to use mosquito repellent that contains DEET and by covering up during outdoor activities - wearing shoes, socks, long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt. Long sleeves and trousers if possible.

Helwig and Carroll said the wet, hot weather is driving the increase in West Nile. "Where with the nuisance mosquitos you get that strong biting feeling so you'll be able to slap", he said. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. You can also reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home by eliminating standing water in gutters, buckets pool covers, pet dishes and birdbaths. Those known to bite both birds and humans act as a vector to spread the virus between the species.

"The ones that pass [West Nile] on are the ones who have fed on a blood meal before, laid eggs, are now infected with the disease, and would take a second blood meal to start that process again", Helwig said.

The symptoms of more severe cases include disorientation, coma, tremors, vision loss and numbness.
