Kohli ended doubts over his ability to score runs in England by leading a great fightback by the tourists on day two of the first Test at Edgbaston.

Kohli's innings featured 22 boundaries and one six and although his knock after that dreaded tour of 2014 (he averaged 13.5) brought smile to the face of his million fans, the form of India's other batsmen continued to be a worry. Kohli rubbed salt into the wound by blowing kisses in the direction of Root and putting his finger to his lips.

Meanwhile, youngster Sam Curran also entered the record books as he bamboozled Indian batsmen with his left-arm pace bowling.

Root's side won the one-day worldwide series between the teams 2-1 and lost the Twenty 20 competition by the same margin earlier this month.

A streaky four off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin saw the 27-year-old Root, in his 127th Test innings, to the 40 runs he had needed to reach 6,000.

"Personally, it was obviously a pretty special day for me with the ball", said Curran.

Earlier, Mohammed Shami took the last wicket to complete England's collapse from 3-216 to 287 all out and finish with bowling figures of 3-64.

England were 45 for one from 14 overs after the first hour with Keaton Jennings unbeaten on 20 and Root on 11.

At the break, skipper Virat Kohli was batting on 9 while his deputy Ajinkya Rahane was undefeated on 8.

The opener managed only to push the ball down into his crease off back-foot defence, then onto his foot before it trickled back onto the base of the stumps.

Kohli, whose arrival at the wicket had been greeted by some boos from the Edgbaston crowd after his controversial celebration of Joe Root's run-out on Thursday, stopped the visitors' reply to England's 287 from falling into disarray.

Dawid Malan then fell lbw to Shami for eight to leave England on 112-3.

The Bengal fast bowler, who picked up two wickets, said that although he did not play in too many games, he was focused when he practised at the National Cricket Academy.

India caused a surprise at the start by picking only one spin bowler.
