A person with knowledge of the talks tells The Associated Press the New York Yankees are nearing a deal to acquire left-hander J.A. Happ from Toronto to bolster their starting rotation. Reportedly, New York will be forced to part with Brandon Drury and Billy McKinney.

Like Drury, McKinney had his path to the majors blocked by a stacked lineup in NY. I was a decent player for a few years (in the big leagues) and to get sent down twice after having a little bit of success in the big leagues previously wasn't easy on me. If Gray can somehow provide the Yankees with similar performances over the next couple of months, it will go a long way toward the Yankees chances of overtaking first place.

The deal was first confirmed as done by Jon Morosi of MLB Network and Fox Sports and Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

The Yankees began the day 5½ games behind AL East-leading Boston. Through 20 starts, he's 10-6 with a 4.18 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 130 strikeouts over 114 innings.

"I'm ready for whatever situation", Britton said. Happ has struggled recently - he's allowed 26 runs in his last five starts and 31.1 innings - so the Yankees are clearly banking on his track record. He was the Yankees' best pitcher in the playoffs a year ago after producing a successful second half, but overall he's been inconsistent over the last season and a half.

However, Atkins made it clear he isn't angling to move them despite an apparent rebuild and the fact that all three players have just two more seasons of club control before they can become free agents for the 2021 campaign.

"I've heard good things", said Gibbons. He went on the disabled list after the team's eighth game because of blurred vision and migraines, and he lost his job to rookie Miguel Andujar. In 307 career Major League Baseball games, Drury is batting.267/.316/.439 with 32 home runs and 131 RBIs.

Wearing a T-shirt that read "We Play To Win", Drury shook hands with several clubhouse workers as he prepared to pack.

The 23-year-old McKinney was selected by Oakland with the 24th overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft, was traded to the Chicago Cubs with Addison Russell and Dan Straily for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel in July 2014, then dealt to the Yankees along with Gleyber Torres and Adam Warren for Chapman in July 2016.

Along with the infusion of position players to the pipeline, the Blue Jays' best prospects such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Danny Jansen are also bat swingers.

It's no secret that the Yankees need a starting pitcher since their rotation behind Luis Severino hasn't been great.
