Tens of thousands of people poured into the streets of Croatia's capital Zagreb to stage a hero's welcome for their national football team.

"Some new players arrived and that was really good for us".

Croatia beat England 2-1 in the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday to spark mass celebrations among Croatian fans in Russian Federation and back home.

Of the four goals France scored against Croatia, two were scored by the sons of African immigrants - Paul Pogba, whose parents immigrated from Guinea, and Kylian Mbappe whose mother is Algerian and father is Cameroonian.

Tens of thousands of Croatians gave a heroes' welcome to their team in Zagreb on Monday after the squad returned from Russian Federation following their World Cup final defeat. Since then, Ronaldo (1998), Oliver Kahn (2002), Zinedine Zidane (2006), Diego Forlan (2010), Lionel Messi (2014) and now Luka Modric (2018) have all been handed the prize despite failing to win the competition. For now, however, we imagine many other football players may just be inspired to whip out their own personal Fortnite celebrations in the future.

Atletico are set to face arch-rivals Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup final on August 15, with Diego Simeone's Europa League winners readying themselves for a meeting with the Champions League holders.

World Cup finalists for the first time in history - Croatia, we are proud of you. "I am sure everyone liked the way they played, and so did I". Not many have forgotten the first French win 20 years ago, when it hosted the World Cup and drubbed favourites Brazil, leading to mammoth crowds converging on the Champs-Elysees to celebrate the victory.
