The report shows that both the iPhone 8 and Samsung's Galaxy S9 Plus accounted for 2.4 percent of the global smartphone sales market share in May, with Apple's handset ever so slightly ahead. Despite this setback, Samsung's chip manufacturing business comes as a savior for the April-June period when an increase in profit of about 50 percent on a yearly basis is expected. The company already posted its earnings guide for the second quarter and, as expected, it didn't do well due to the Galaxy S9.
The electronics maker is reporting estimated profit of 14.8 trillion Korean won (USD$13.2BN) on revenue of 58 trillion Korean won (USD$51.9BN) for the quarter.
The smartphone market has been slowing down in recent quarters.
Bloomberg notes that Samsung's OLED sales to Apple for its iPhone X have also been weaker than expected, despite Apple having flogged 52.2 million phones in the second quarter.
Early next year, it's likely that Samsung is going to announce the Galaxy S10.
Reliable leaker Ice Universe claimed that the Galaxy X foldable smartphone will be unveiled at CES 2019, a month before the Galaxy S10 at the 2019 Mobile World Congress. The size, however, is said to reduce to 4.3-inch after the phone has been folded. A folding phone can't be easy to make, hence why it's supposed to be playing it safe by only making a limited number of devices. The rumor contradicts previous reports that had said the Galaxy S10 will precede the Galaxy X's arrival. "We are dedicated to continuing to evolve our smartphone portfolio to provide our customers with devices that enhance their lives and open the possibilities to new experiences", a spokesperson for the company said.
