Portugal urged by Fernando Santos to hit ‘Euro 2016 levels’ against Morocco

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo shoots at goal from a free kick against Morocco at Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow, on Wednesday.

"I'm not disappointed about the performance, I'm happy with it and very proud of my players", emotional Morocco coach Herve Renard told reporters.

Morocco star Amrabat lines up for his side against Portugal as they aim to breathe new life into their World Cup campaign.

No other European player has scored as many as the Portuguese and only Ali Daei, with 109 goals for Iran, is above him in the scoring charts.

Ronaldo's latest match-winning exploits took his side to the top of Group B before Spain's clash with Iran on Wednesday night, while Morocco are heading home without a point and without a goal to their name so far this tournament.

Daei scored 109 goals for Iran in a 13-year global career between 1993 and 2006. Younes Belhanda was twice denied by goalkeeper Rui Patricio's diving saves, and defender Mehdi Benatia scooped a shot over the bar.

Morocco, in their first finals appearance for 20 years, regrouped well and showed some real positivity in attack with Hakim Ziyech and Nordin Amrabat seeing plenty of the ball and Amrabat furious at not being awarded a penalty after wrestling with Raphael Guerreiro.

With time running out late on, Portugal broke and Ronaldo dribbled his way into the area before hitting the deck in dramatic fashion. Senegal, which won 2-1 against Poland, is the only African to win its first 2018 World Cup game. Cristiano Ronaldo single-handedly earned his side a point, but this is a game where he may not need to be quite so outstanding to get three points.

The much-talked about plan of a Portugal in possession, spreading the play and dictating the tempo, never materialised. He got the opener for Ronaldo against Spain in the 3rd minute last week.

The FIFA World Cup 2018 Match-18 between Portugal vs Morocco is going to be played at the Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow.
