First daughter Ivanka Trump said it's "ridiculous" French Open organizers did not give tennis star Serena Williams a top ranking to the tournament, which kicks off this weekend.

"Wimbledon have pretty much demonstrated that over the years, and the French Open have chosen not to exercise their ability to give Serena a seeding". According to Ivanka trump, it is impossible to punish someone professionally for the birth of the child.

Any tweaking of the rules would come too late for Williams this time around, but many hope it could help trigger a deeper conversation, and even prompt real change for professional female athletes. But she will, I'm sure, be encouraged to see she can not face a top-10 player before the fourth round.

She won her first two matches before losing to sister Venus Williams.

The clay-court Grand Slam tournament starts on Sunday.

This will be Williams' first Grand Slam event since giving birth to her daughter in September.

Serena Williams recently returned to tennis following maternity leave.

Now seeded fifth for this year's tournament, Ostapenko's cards are marked as she seeks to lift the Suzanne Lenglen trophy once more, while world No 1 Halep will be out for revenge in search of her first Grand Slam title.

The two grand slams she has played since resuming her career have resulted in fourth-round losses but having reunited with former coach Thomas Hogstedt last month, the five-times major victor is moving back in the right direction, according to Roland Garros great Chris Evert. Complications resulting from that surgery kept the world's greatest female tennis player laid up for six weeks of bed rest.

Williams has received support from the likes of longtime rival Maria Sharapova, No. 1-ranked Simona Halep and No. 4 Elina Svitolina.

The 27-year-old showed improved form on clay 12 months ago when she was beaten in a tight quarter-final by eventual champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Norrie, 22, has climbed to the verge of the top 100 to earn his place in the Roland Garros draw for the first time and is rewarded with a match against Gojowczyk.

"I think it's more of a protection for women to have a life", Williams told The Times.

Osaka says she enjoys trying to bamboozle players who never know what to expect from her hard-hitting style.
