The film brought in an estimated $1.9 million this weekend, pushing its domestic cume to $696.2 million, leaving less than $4 million before the film becomes only the third domestic release to ever top $700 million at the domestic box office.
New Line and Melissa McCarthy's comedy, Life of the Party, came in No. 2 with $18.5 million from 3,656 theaters. Both films drew overwhelmingly female audiences, too. It also got similarly mixed reviews from critics. The comedy stars McCarthy as Deanna Miles, who, shortly after her dropping her daughter Maddie (Molly Gordon) off at college, learns that her husband (Matt Walsh) is leaving her for another woman (Julie Bowen).
The studio is "thrilled" with the results.
That was better than the critical mauling received by Universal Pictures' "Breaking In", which generated $16.5 million against a forecast of $15 million from Box Office Pro. Union portrays a single mom who has to protect her two children (played by Seth Carr and Ajiona Alexus) after her father's Malibu mansion is invaded by burglars. The result follows Marvel Studios' recent phenomenon Black Panther which has made over £50M in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
"We have a great partner in Will Packer and "Breaking In" is another example of his very talented approach and our mutual success", Orr said.
Among holdovers, MGM and Pantelion Films' remake Overboard placed No. 4 in its second outing with $10.1 million after declining a narrow 31 percent. And rounding out the top five was "A Quiet Place" with $6.4 million. The thriller directed by John Krasinski has made $169 million at the domestic box office. The pic's rule is expected to end next weekend when Fox and Ryan Reynolds unfurl Deadpool 2. The film also marked the coming together of several superheroes and although it is not imperative for one to watch all the films to understand Avengers: Infinity War, a little background knowledge will certainly be useful.
