Giuliani tries to clarify hush money comments

Giuliani said this week that Trump knew about Cohen's 2016 payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels and that Trump had repaid Cohen through monthly retainers.

Trump left the White House shortly after that, but he spoke to reporters about Giuliani again when he arrived at Joint Base Andrews to catch his flight to Texas.

This combination of file pictures shows US President Donald Trump and adult film actress/director Stormy Daniels.

"We're not changing any stories", Trump proclaimed.

But Trump's affair with a porn star, Stormy Daniels might turn out to be a bigger problem than he anticipated.

But no debt to Mr Cohen was listed on Mr Trump's personal financial disclosure form, which was certified on June 16, 2017.

And the president contradicted himself when, this week, he said he paid back Cohen for the $130,000 given to Clifford just days before the election.

He said in a statement that he used his own personal funds to facilitate the payment.

Sanders, meanwhile, was forced to defend her credibility, a week after comedian Michelle Wolf created an uproar at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner with jokes about the press secretary, including one quip that she "burns facts" and "uses that ash to create a flawless smoky eye".

"The president's other lawyers ultimately determined that Mr. Giuliani had consulted with Mr. Trump, people close to them said, but were left speechless about why he decided to make the disclosure in such a high-profile way and without any strategy to handle the fallout".

Questioned by reporters on Air Force One in April, Trump denied any knowledge of the payments.

"He says he loves me", Giuliani said, calling the issue a matter of "interpretation".

Cohen is under investigation by federal prosecutors in NY for possible bank fraud, wire fraud, and campaign finance violations, according to people familiar with the matter. In its raid on Cohen's office in April, the Federal Bureau of Investigation seized documents related to the payment. Learn before you speak.

Trump also insisted that Robert Mueller was treating him unfairly because Mueller "worked for Obama for eight years".

Those comments come as Trump's lawyers are continuing to negotiate with special Muller about the conditions of a possible interview.

The Washington Post reported that Cohen is under investigation for bank fraud and campaign finance law violations.

On Thursday morning, Trump issued a trio of carefully worded tweets, largely echoing the points Giuliani had made in his Wednesday night interview. But he says he needs to "find that we're going to be treated fairly because everybody sees it now and it's a pure witch hunt".

He added that Cohen handled a "tiny, tiny little fraction" of his overall legal work. Last month, the president said he did not know anything about the transaction. "You take a look at what I said".

Giuliani set off his bombshell during an interview with Fox News's Sean Hannity when he said Trump reimbursed Cohen for the $130,000 payment. "They funneled it through a law firm and the president repaid it".

By revealing the repayment scheme, Giuliani implicated Trump in Cohen's apparent misconduct.

Then Giuliani said this: "Imagine if that came out on October 15 in the middle of the last debate with Hillary Clinton", Giuliani said on Fox. In those times, when the "mainstream media" controlled the narrative, Donald Trump stood no chance of becoming the US President.

Mr Giuliani has warned Mr Trump that he fears Mr Cohen, the President's longtime personal attorney, will "flip", bending in the face of a potential prison sentence, and he has urged Mr Trump to cut off communications with him, according to a person close to Mr Giuliani. "Forget about this story, leave Mr. Trump alone".
