Atletico Madrid have beaten Arsenal 1-0 in the Europa League to reach a fifth continental final in nine seasons and deny outgoing manager Arsene Wenger a last attempt at an global trophy with the Gunners.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: "It doesn't look very good".
The defeat means Wenger will leave Arsenal at the end of the season after 22 years that yielded three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups but no European trophy. Notably, the north London club will be missing top-tier continental action for the second straight season.
"It's very sad, I'm very sad tonight".
"We needed an angry striker up front and a team needs that, we work with intensity and we live off the mistake we can force our rivals to make". Well it's very sad.
"When you go out of the competition it is very hard to take". The game can be very cruel.
Former Chelsea striker Costa outmuscled Nacho Monreal but fired into the side-netting before Laurent Koscielny was stretchered off in agony in the 11th minute with a torn Achilles which will rule him out of the World Cup with France. The Arsenal skipper might have been at fault for Antoine Griezmann's late equaliser in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium, but there is no doubting the Frenchman's leadership qualities - his early departure resulted in a void which Jack Wilshere could not fill despite his best efforts.
"The tie should have been over in the first game". "The unsafe situations were there but in the two boxes we missed something". They [Atletico] are a team that defends well. I will take some time to recover from this.
"They are a clever side that defends very well".
They are also looking for a new first-choice goalkeeper with Petr Cech's mistakes costing him his position to error-prone David Ospina. "Stopping to think all we are doing is not good, we need to look at Espanyol, our game on Sunday, and stay second in La Liga, which is very important for us".
The goal came at a critical time and gave Atletico the win on the night which saw them book their place in the Europa League final, ending Arsenal's only chance of silverware and getting into the Champions League next season. I'm very sad tonight.' 'Unfortunately, you have to go through that in our game.
