The musicals "Mean Girls" and "SpongeBob SquarePants" have each gotten 12 Tony nominations, leading the pack for the 2018 awards to be given out in June.

In the play categories, Amy Schumer scored a nod for Steve Martin's comedy Meteor Shower, but numerous season's other big names were passed over, including Captain America Chris Evans, whose Lobby Hero co-stars Michael Cera and Brian Tyree Henry both landed Featured Actor nominations. "I'm from a small town where people don't really get out and dream big".

Also up for Best Musical is The Band's Visit and Frozen.

The two-part "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", got 10 nods, among them Anthony Boyle, who plays Scorpius Malfoy in a highly energetic performance.

Nabbing a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role was Taylor Louderman, who attended UM through her sophomore year before taking a sabbatical after earning a starring role in "Bring It On: The Musical". "I just really thought I would never be here". Also nominated are Harry Hadden-Paton of My Fair Lady, Joshua Henry of Carousel, and Tony Shalhoub of The Band's Visit.

"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", a new play about the grown wizard and his troubled relationship with his teen-aged son, won 10 nominations, including best play and best actor for star Jamie Parker. "You hear audible gasps, and sobs".

Other nominees include Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Junk, Latin History for Morons, Fairnelli and the King, and The Children for Best Play. "Broadway audiences are incomparable".

A hit play from the "Harry Potter" franchise joined an acclaimed revival of AIDS drama "Angels in America" to dominate Broadway's Tony award nominations on Tuesday.

The best play revival category is filled by "Angels in America", "Three Tall Women", "Lobby Hero", "Travesties" and "The Iceman Cometh". Material was added by Berkshire Eagle arts editor Jeffrey Borak.
