Keith Raniere, also known as "Vanguard" to members within NXIVM, and Allison Mack, who is best known for her role on the TV series "Smallville", were both indicted by a grand jury on charges arising from Raniere and Mack's alleged roles in a secret society within NXIVM. When reached for comment by BuzzFeed News, a representative for Mack said, "At this time, I have no comment regarding the arrest of Allison Mack".
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the US Attorney's office for the Eastern District of NY alleges that NXIVM recruited slaves into what was called "a woman's only organization" that would help empower them. Mostly she nodded "yes" to questions asked her by Judge Pollak, but, twice judge Pollak instructed Mack to answer verbally, and she said "yes" so quietly it was nearly inaudible to spectators in the courtroom. Authorities allege Raniere coerced women into a master-slave relationship and forced them to endure 20-30 minute branding "ceremonies" wherein they were branded with a design composed of his initials.
Mack directed her slaves to have sex with Raniere, among other things, prosecutors say. "Mack is one of the women in the first level of the pyramid immediately below Raniere".
It's said the former Smallville star recruited and persuaded young women to join a secret organization called "DOS" or the "Vow" under the guise of a women's empowerment group.
If convicted, she could face between 15 years and life in prison.
"Mack and other DOS masters recruited DOS slaves by telling them that they were joining a women-only organization that would empower them and eradicate purported weaknesses that the Nxivm curriculum taught were common in women", the indictment says.
Mack, he said, did not pose "a legitimate risk of flight", and should be released on bail.
Another Smallville actress, Kristen Kreuk, has said she left NXIVM years ago and praised the women who exposed the group.
The 35-year-old was observed after cult pioneer Keith Raniere as authorities hauled him far out of a $ 10,000-a-week Mexican hallway at which the couple had been hiding out, running.
Allison Mack was accused in an indictment unsealed Friday in federal court in Brooklyn. The woman told police she was tied to a table and forced to engage in oral sex with an unidentified person, according to the Albany Times-Union.
In a letter attributed to Raniere previously posted on a website related to Nxivm, he denied the practices were sanctioned by the self-described self-help group.
