Big Match Focus: City wary of title collapse ahead of Spurs showdown

Pep Guardiola was banished to the stands as Manchester City lost in the Champions League quarter-finals to Liverpool

Pep Guardiola has ruled Sergio Aguero out of Manchester City's trip to Tottenham Hotspur tonight and cast doubt over whether the Argentine will feature again this season as he struggles to return to full fitness.

And Guardiola is clearly taking no chances as he played down City's chances of securing the title sooner rather than later, saying: 'It can happen.

"I don't know", said the City manager.

"We can not forget he was two months injured".

"He made a huge effort because after the action from Ashley Young against United, his problems in the knee, he could not train", Guardiola said.

None of that means that City aren't an exceptionally unsafe team, and after crashing out of the Champions League to Liverpool and suffering a loss to United last week, Guardiola will want to get that monkey off his back.

"In football in 90 minutes you can win or lose, but we need to be more consistent through the whole season in result and performance because you need to be consistent if you are going to win".

City is also without midfielder Fernandinho, who is suspended, and John Stones is still out with a thigh injury.

Premier League chiefs met yesterday and a majority of the 20 club's voted against introducing the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for the 208/2019 season.

City are 13 points clear at the top with six matches to play and could be confirmed as champions this weekend.

The half past 5 kick off takes place at Anfield, where Liverpool will look to carry the momentum of their Champions League win over Man City into their game against Bournemouth.

City are in the midst of a really concerning run of form, having lost their last three games, and Guardiola will be keen for his side to bounce back immediately with a win against Spurs tomorrow.

He admitted that Sunday's game against Spurs would be another hard game for his side. "They [Cleveland] won three games in a row, so in sports it can always happen". As soon as we win the first one, the second one will be easier.

"We need to be consistent during the whole season and be the best team like Manchester City is doing today".

"This week is the first time and it was in different competitions".
