The pardon comes at a moment when the president faces an escalating special counsel investigation of his own. Comey was responsible for appointing the special counsel who pursued the Libby case. "I'm sure Libby's happy to have it, but the audience here is [former Trump campaign chairman] Paul Manafort, [Trump's personal lawyer] Michael Cohen, and a slew of other people who can incriminate Trump". "Hopefully, this full pardon will help rectify a very sad portion of his life", Trump said on Friday, Efe news reported. She said that Libby had a fair trial and that "President's Trump's pardon is not based on the truth".
"For over a dozen years we have suffered under the weight of a bad injustice", he wrote.
The president signed off on clemency for Scooter Libby on Friday, following months of consideration. There's very little point to this pardon, since Libby never spent a day in jail and has long since been readmitted to the bar. He then emailed Libby, whose reaction was not to celebrate to soon, Jeffress said.
"I don't know Mr. Libby", Trump wrote in a statement. "I had my hopes up for quite awhile".
The move was backed, though, by former members of the Bush administration.
President Trump pardoned Lewis "Scooter" Libby who in 20017 was convicted of perjury, obstructing justice and making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation when he lied about leaking Plame's identity. It is shocking that the aide to Vice President Cheney was ever prosecuted, particularly because the American government what used to be called in court the People of the United States already knew who committed the leak the prosecutor was appointed to investigate.
After his 2007 conviction, President George W. Bush, who was in office at the time, commuted Libby's sentence, which was originally set for 30 months. She said Trump told her Libby was "a wonderful person who got screwed".
Sanders beat back questions that Trump's pardon was sending a message to those witnesses who might by cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation. It remains true today.
There has been no indication that Trump had a particular interest in Libby's case until recently, when John Bolton, an ally of Cheney's, took over as national security adviser at the White House. "But the facts have not changed". An FBI investigation started into whether Plame's identity was leaked to reporters as political payback for her husband's public challenge to the administration. The injustice was so abject that one juror wept as the verdict was read, and two stated they hoped Mr. Libby would be pardoned.
Liz Cheney is a daughter of the former vice president. But critics noted the timing, coming as Trump fumes over Robert Mueller's probe, which he has dubbed a "witch hunt". His anger was reinforced by excerpts from Comey's book, which paint the President as unethical.
"Scooter" Libby, like us all, is an imperfect human being. What's more, it reminds us as well how the slightest miscue in testimony - i.e., "lying to the FBI" - can put even the most honorable men behind bars.
It has nothing to do with Libby, and it has nothing to do with me.
