Robert Griffin III, Ravens agree to 1-year deal

Baltimore Ravens sign former Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III

Ravens Sign Former Redskin Robert Griffin III

Newsome said Wednesday that Griffin's signing wouldn't stop the Ravens from potentially selecting a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft if Baltimore feels one is the best available player. Griffin will have a good chance to win the backup job in Baltimore, where 2016 undrafted free agent Josh Woodrum is the only other quarterback on the roster behind starter Joe Flacco.

However, the quarterback's fortunes declined after that as he struggled with injuries and his last National Football League action came for the Cleveland Browns at the end of the 2016 season. He initially lived up to advance billing, throwing for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns, five interceptions while adding 120 rushing attempts, 815 yards and seven running scores, enough to garner Offensive Rookie of the Year over Andrew Luck. I'm really feeling like we got a steal.

Griffin, 28, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 draft. As it turns out, the Ravens were interested in Griffin previous year as well.

But Griffin was the starting quarterback the last time the Browns recorded a win, on December 24, 2016. He signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday night. The only game he missed was because of a knee injury suffered in Week 14 against the Ravens.

But injuries, which began at the end of his rookie season, have since plagued Griffin's career, as a sophomore slump and serious knee issues led to him being benched for all of 2015 in favor of Kirk Cousins. He will probably be here early next week to sign the deal, ' general manager Ozzie Newsome said.

The Ravens signing RGIII shouldn't preclude Baltimore from possibly drafting a young signal-caller this year. He came off injured reserve to start four more games, but threw for just 886 yards and tossed two touchdowns to three interceptions (72.5 quarterback rating). "He really wanted to be a Raven", said Ravens Coach John Harbaugh. I believe our players are going to love the fact that he's here.
