The 2018 Commonwealth Games got underway with the opening ceremony on Wednesday night and social media lit up with reaction to the event. "We understand there may be showers. we hope that you will be wowed by tonight because I think it's going to be special".

Ahye said she was humbled by the honour, as Team TTO prepares for an evening which will see the packed Carrara Stadium getting a taste of the Carnival spirit, with some of the athletes displaying TRIBE Carnival costumes during the parade.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games was also not too different as a 16,000 capacity Major Dhanychand Stadium was fully sold out with last tickets getting sold more than 3 ½ months before the event started.

As a proud Gold Coast local and the biggest Australian star in the Games' premier sport, Pearson was the ideal choice to complete the baton relay, just as Cathy Freeman had been the flawless fit to light the cauldron at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The Gold Coast Organising Committee (GOLDOC), overseeing the preparations and conduct of the XXI Commonwealth Games, has been caught on its wrong foot again.

Australia's men's hockey team captain Mark Knowles led the hosts through the stadium at 9:36pm local time with the public address letting out the popular 1981 tune by Australian rock band Men at Work "Down Under".

The first events take place on Thursday with the Games scheduled to finish on April 15.

The ceremony finished with Migaloo, a giant animatronic whale, being hoisted high into the stadium.

"The ancient stories told by the Indigenous people of Australia remind us that though we may be half a world away we are connected", he read.
