APC Fetes Tinubu At 66

APC meets on committee's report on federalism

Buhari opposes tenure extension for APC chiefs

The National Leader of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, said that President Muhammadu Buhari's rejection of the tenure elongation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, national and state executives has saved the party from legal turmoil and crisis.

"In as much as the NEC is the most constitutional body to make a pronouncement on behalf of the party, Mr President in his own capacity can not make a categorical statement because NEC is really above Mr President, according to the party's hierarchy and constitution".

The constitution of the Elders Council is part of the amendment contained in the party's constitution which was expected to be adopted by the National Executive Committee.

Others alleged that Odigie-Oyegun had been running the accounts of the party without recourse to majority of national officers of the party.

Odigie-Oyegun, who fielded questions from State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting which was chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, said the meeting discussed the party's report on true federalism.

In a bench ruling, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba said the court would adopt a procedure that would guarantee fair and expeditious hearing of the matter.

The NEC last month extended the tenure of the officials by one year, amidst dissention from party bigwigs like Bola Tinubu, ex-Lagos governor. "The 1999 Constitution of Nigeria ... also prescribes periodic election for party executives at regular intervals which must not exceed four years". A Caretaker Committee can not remedy this situation, and can not validly act in place of elected officers.

"Furthermore, I think if we deviate from the constitutional provisions, we might be endangering the fortunes of our party".

"If the tenure of our party executive can be legally faulted then it means that any nomination and primary election can also be faulted". He said current members of the NEC should seek re-election if they wanted to stay on in their positions.

He said that a timetable had already been approved for the holding of congresses and elections.

"While the repositioned PDP maintain its unpretentious stance towards Nigerians, we charge the minister of information to direct his demand to the Presidency and the APC as Nigerians are expecting them to refund the stolen funds they used to scheme themselves into office in 2015". "I think this should be allowed to go forward and all efforts should now be geared towards making them a great success".
