Several Dog Food Products Recalled Over Salmonella Concerns for Pets and Humans

Redbarn Pet Products of California is voluntarily recalling Bully Sticks because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

Contaminated raw pet food is of particular importance because of the potential hazard to both human and animals, according to the FDA.

The 6 animal cases have been linked to Darwin's Natural and ZooLogics pet foods, which are manufactured by Tukwila, Wash. -based Arrow Reliance, a company that has issued at least 4 recalls for salmonella or listeria since October 2016.

Raws for Paws: 5-pound and 1-pound sealed plastic containers of Ground Turkey Pet Food. The UPC of the recalled product is #7 85184 25105 8.

Recalls were issued for Pet Food Combo Pack cases with the following codes: 9900008, 9900009, 9900014 and 9900015.

Both lots were sold through online stores and the recall appeared after a dog did test positive for infestation with salmonella, together with positive results for Darwin's Natural food eaten. One was a kitten, but the types of the other pets was not disclosed.

Salmonella infection symptoms in people can include diarrhea that lasts for more than three days, or is accompanied by high fever, blood in the stool, or so much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down and you pass very little urine.

The Minnesota Dept. of Health (MDH) reported two children from the same household were sickened by Salmonella R. Tests performed by the health department and the Minnesota Dept. of Agriculture (MDA) revealed that the same strain of S. However pets do not always have symptoms, which for animals include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Also pets that have consumed these products and are showing symptoms of a salmonella infection should be taken to the vet.

In addition, lab analysis of closed packages of Darwin's pet food obtained by FDA from Judy on January 24 found Salmonella in the product. Consumers who purchased this raw pet food should throw it away.

The FDA is also investigating a pattern of contamination in raw pet foods made by Arrow Reliance Inc., which produces products for Darwin's Natural Pet Products and ZooLogics Pet Food. Pet owners who choose to feed raw pet food should be aware of the risks associated with these products.

Because animals can shed the bacteria when they have bowel movements, its particularly important to clean up the animals feces in yards or parks where people or other animals may become exposed.
