New Lions head coach Matt Patricia made his official debut in Detroit Wednesday, saying he'll "work tirelessly to build a team that everyone around here can be proud of". Instead, with the way that things played out in the insane 41-33 victory by Philadelphia, McDaniels' immediate future is in serious question while Patricia probably couldn't have looked worse in his potential new suitor's (the Detroit Lions) eyes.
"I'm very much appreciative and thankful to be the head coach of the Detroit Lions", Patricia said. He's in New England.
He said he hasn't begun to reflect on what he's accomplished in New England, having been a part of three Super Bowl-winning teams. As I wrote earlier, you need to change the culture in Detroit, and Patricia might be the guy to get the job done. In two seasons as the full-time offensive coordinator in Detroit, he has overseen a major progression from that unit, finishing this past season seventh in the National Football League in points scored. "That's when you start calling it "The Lions Way.' We've got a long way to go before we have any particular 'Way" in which we'll call our own". In addition to his offensive line coaching experience with the San Diego Chargers (2016), Minnesota Vikings (2011-15), Cleveland Browns (2005) and New England Patriots (1998-2001), Davidson also served as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach/offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (2007-10) and Browns (2006), respectively. The site even goes as far as to name Alex Grinch his replacement in Columbus. He was the head coach at the University of CT from 2011 to 2013.
Belichick had a history of taking players who were coached by Schiano at Rutgers, particularly in the secondary. Prior to UConn he spent four years as the special teams coordinator/running backs coach at Iowa. Last year's DC, Teryl Austin, took his talents to Cincinnati to become the Bengals new defensive coordinator.
"For me, whatever anybody has done in the past really doesn't have anything to do with me", he said.
The man who used to compile the data points for Bill Belichick knows all about the trend he's trying to break: From Romeo Crennel to Eric Mangini to Josh McDaniels, no other Patriots assistant has gone on to measurable success anywhere else. "You'd have to talk to those teams that are involved".
