Two dead after Amtrak train collides with freight train in South Carolina

A CRASH between an Amtrak passenger train and a CSX freight train in SC has killed two people and injured about 70 others, authorities have said.

"Additionally, affected customers reporting injuries have been transported to local hospitals".

The train was carrying 139 passengers and a crew of eight when it slammed into the parked freight train and derailed.

He said it appeared the Amtrak train had been on the wrong track at the time of the crash. Hazmat crews were also dispatched to the scene, where 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled.

"The incident is very near the state farmers' market and other residential areas but right now, everyone is safe", said Derrec Becker, public information officer at the South Carolina Emergency Management Division.

The two dead were Amtrak employees on the passenger train, according to McMaster.

The Amtrak train's lead engine, as well as some passenger cars, were derailed. He had taken shelter with other passengers at the nearby Pine Ridge Middle School, where authorities were providing medical care.

The injuries ranged from cuts and scratches to broken bones, Lexington County spokesman Harrison Cahill said.

An Orange Park man was one of two men killed and over 100 injured early Sunday when two trains collided in SC.

Robert Sumwalt, the NTSB chairman, told CNN that an NTSB team will arrive in South Carolina Sunday morning to begin the investigation, which should take 12 to 18 months. The CSX freight train was empty, he said.

The injured were in hospitals as emergency responders and police were working on the scene.

Train 91 arrived in Raleigh just after 9 p.m. Saturday, according to Amtrak. On Wednesday, a train carrying Republican members of Congress to a retreat in West Virginia hit a trash truck outside of Charlottesville, Va. The truck driver was killed and six people were injured in the incident.
