Amtrak's Silver Star Derailed in SC

BREAKING NEWS: Two dead and 50 passengers are injured as Amtrak train smashes into freight carriages in South Carolina

Two dead and 50 injured in US passenger and freight train collision

Officials say an Amtrak train collided with a CSX freight train at 2:45 a.m.

The CSX train was stationary on the tracks, "awaiting a later movement", when the collision occurred, Gov. Henry McMaster said in a press conference Sunday morning.

More than 70 people were injured and taken to hospitals when the Amtrak train collided with a CSX freight train near Cayce on Sunday morning. "I mean we see stuff like this on the news all the time, but here we have it, it's touched my family closely and we just thank God she's OK", Neblett said.

The southbound passenger train's locomotive was lying on its side, and the first auto was bent and also derailed, although it remained upright, according to images from the scene in the small city of Cayce, South Carolina.

The Amtrak train's engineer, Michael Kempf and conductor Michael Cell, both of them were traveling in the first vehicle of the train, died in the crash.

Kinney said she and her boyfriend suffered minor injuries.

Amtrak Train 91 derailed early this morning in Cayce, South Carolina.

The crash is still being investigated.

Sumwalt said the switch was supposed to allow the Amtrak train to continue traveling in a roughly a straight line.

The worst rail tragedy in recent SC history took place in 2005 when a freight engineer parked a train on a side track near a textile mill in Graniteville and forgot to flip the switch back to keep trains on the main track. They said they are trying to figure out why the switch was lined that way.

"It's a awful thing to see, to understand what force was involved", South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster told reporters. CSX's duties include "directing the signal systems which control the access to sidings and yards", Amtrak said. According to Dr. Steve Shelton with Palmetto Health, one patient remains critical and two others are in serious condition.

Shelton added that the "majority" of patients did not sustain life-threatening injuries. Many were treated for cuts and bruises and released, while two others were admitted, spokeswoman Jennifer Wilson said. The lead engine of the train derailed.

At least three patients were hospitalized in critical or serious condition, with almost all the rest treated for minor injuries such as cuts, bruises and whiplash, authorities said. Hazmat responded to the spill and there is no further threat to the public. Just one individual on the motor-truck was actually killed. Today's wreck was the third fatal Amtrak incident since mid-December. A chartered train for Republican members of Congress heading to a retreat collided with a garbage truck Wednesday in rural Virginia, killing the truck driver.
