Details are beginning to leak about the star-studded performance line-up at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, including the opening segment with U2, Kendrick Lamar, and, according to some rumors, Dave Chappelle.
The performance included a giant American flag and dancers in hoodies, who collapsed to the sound of gunshots as Lamar rapped. "The academy as an institution, while we don't necessarily take lots of [political] positions, the most important thing we can do is support the artist community to have the right to say what they want to say", Portnow said on a break from rehearsals.
The rapper thanked Rihanna, who appeared on stage with him.
Lamar wore a white rose in a sign of solidarity with the anti-sexual harassment movement to accept the first televised award of the night which he said "really belongs to her" in reference to Rihanna.
The Grammy Awards air live from Madison Square Garden at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT on CBS.
Mars swept up awards for best R&B performance, best R&B song and best R&B album.
Alessia Cara won for best new artist.
The late Carrie Fisher was also an early victor.
