Harry Kane spares Tottenham's blushes to force replay against lowly Newport

Officials - Newport v Tottenham (27/1/18)

Mauricio Pochettino has told Tottenham's official website that he told the Spurs players at half-time of their FA Cup fourth round tie with Newport County how disappointed he was to see the Premier League side unable to match the home team's motivation levels during the first-half.

The Welsh side deservedly lead Spurs by Padraig Amond's first half header until the 82nd minute, and have earned themselves a lucrative replay at Wembley in 10 days time.

But with the visitors seemingly fast running out of ideas, substitute Son Heung-min flicked on a corner and Kane ended a frustrating night in front of goal with the simplest of far-post tap-ins.

Ben Tozer's long throw into the box caused consternation in Spurs' defence and Robbie Willmott's clip across to the back post was nodded in by Amond.

It was a rare moment of concern for Newport but Rodney Parade erupted six minutes later.

Having those thoughts at the back of his mind, the Tottenham manager opted to field a strong side from the beginning, with the likes of Harry Kane and Victor Wanyama all starting.

The 27-year-old was the standout performer in the first half with his neat passing and tough tackling, only for a 32nd-minute booking to put a brake on his excellent display. "If you do that, then you're going to get the punishment in any walk of life".

"The players have made me the proudest manager in the country", Flynn said.

Wigan have slumped down English football's ladder since winning the FA Cup in 2013, but the League One leaders rekindled memories of that run to Wembley.

Former West Ham forward Frank Nouble - the only Newport player with Premier League experience - missed a great chance to open the scoring after just four minutes, only for the forward to blaze horribly over the bar with just Michel Vorm to beat.

Huffing and puffing for much of the second period, Spurs were finally able to find an equaliser late on through Harry Kane.

The France global has been the subject of plenty of criticism from Spurs fans on social media and he was unable to change the opinions of many during their match in Wales.

Nigeria's Kelechi Iheanacho also scored twice for the Foxes, with Wilfred Ndidi making it 5-1 in stoppage-time.

"The team didn't show they wanted to get into the next round, which was disappointing", said Pochettino.

Manchester United made it through to the fourth round on Friday, with new signing Alexis Sanchez impressing on debut in a 4-0 win away to lowly Yeovil Town.
