The Colorado Police Officers Foundation has set up a fund to raise money for the family of slain Adams County Sheriff's Office deputy Heath Gumm.
Adams County sheriff's deputies arrested one man and are continuing a search for potentially more suspects after a deputy was shot January 24 in an unincorporated section of the county. Local media are reporting that the deputy died at Denver Health Medical Center.
At 11:30 on Wednesday, one suspect is in custody while law enforcement searches for two more based on witness testimony. According to KMGH, deputies were in pursuit of a man linked to the assault report when he opened fire, hitting one of them.
"Tonight we watched as a community was on edge and a sheriff's deputy was shot while responding to a call in Adams County".
Law enforcement vehicles lined Speer Boulevard for blocks as they waited for a police processional to leave from the hospital with the fallen officer early Thursday morning. "They do a good job for all of us, and they put their lives on the line every day 24 hours a day, and we appreciate their service". Governor John Hickenlooper ordered all flags to to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Deputy Gumm.
Other residents showed their support for Gumm, other deputies and police in different ways.
The shooting happened less than a month after 29-year-old Douglas County sheriff's deputy Zackari Parrish was fatally shot and four other officers were injured in an ambush in suburban Denver. It's located outside an Adams County Sheriff's substation where it's assumed Gumm worked.
