Despite mentoring a young, athletic core led by All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kidd was sacked by Milwaukee general manager Jon Horst on Monday. Giannis Antetokounmpo turned into an All-Star under his watch, and the Bucks were considered an emerging force in the East at the start of the season. The former Louisville coach reportedly is a "potential" candidate for the Milwaukee Bucks head coach position according to unnamed industry sources.
Jon Horst, the team's general manager, issued a letter to Milwaukee fans thanking Kidd for his services and stating "ultimately we decided that a fresh approach and a change in leadership are needed to continue elevating our team to the next level and bringing us closer to our goal of winning championships".
"We made this decision relatively quickly", Horst said. This goes hand in hand with the report from ESPN's Chris Haynes that Giannis was "devastated" when he heard the news that Kidd was about to be fired.
Under Kidd, the Bucks had a regular-season record of 139-152. Giannis tried to be a leader and fight for Kidd's job, but that could have consequences in team chemistry and management.
Kidd was one of the NBA's most dynamic guards during his playing career and a triple-double threat in his heyday.
Horst made it clear Kidd's firing was performance-based, and it's easy to find cause there. Bledsoe was traded to Milwaukee from Phoenix in November, in exchange for Monroe, a protected first and second-round draft picks. "We the ownership are universal in support of that", he added. And the team will get a boost when Jabari Parker, nearing a return from knee surgery, is back in the mix.
Milwaukee is never going to be a natural free agent destination, so its avenues for getting one of the league's top five players are perpetually limited.
Asked to assess the problems with the Bucks, Prunty said, "Well, I think the bottom line is, we've talked about this as a staff, is that we have been consistently inconsistent".
The Milwaukee Bucks are celebrating their 50th anniversary this season.
